Le Breton Flats Redevelopment

LeBreton Flats have remained barren since the federal government expropriated the land in 1962. Phase I of redevelopment began without proper consultation by the National Capital Commission (NCC). NDP MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) held a community dialogue on a vision for a vibrant village rooted in the history of the land and dedicated to our community values. Read Paul Dewar's full report of the community consultation.

Key Recommendations:

  • There must be real, meaningful, and ongoing community consultation
  • The redevelopment must be an example for Canada and the world
  • It must include permanent affordable housing
  • It must demonstrate environmental leadership
  • It must recognize and respect the culture, history, and current claims of First Nations
  • It must consider and be integrated with existing neighbourhoods
  • It must include public transit planning from the outset
  • The bidding process must change
  • The development must be accessible
  • Public art, cultural events and festivals are important to the area
  • The development must include and support mixed incomes and uses
  • Local and small-scale commercial and light industrial uses are needed
