Budget 2010 fails to protect pensions and create jobs, says New Democrat MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre).

“Budgets are about choices. Mr. Harper chose to continue giving away public funds to corporate tax cuts instead of protecting pensions, creating jobs and helping lift our seniors out of poverty”.

Dewar expressed disappointment that despite yesterday’s promises in the Speech from the Throne, the budget provided no protection for workers facing company bankruptcy. 

“The budget does nothing to protect the hard-earned pensions and Long-Term Disability benefits of Nortel workers in Ottawa” said Dewar.

“This budget also fails to make any strategic investment in job creation. Despite yesterday’s promises, there’s nothing here for reinvigorating the high tech sector in our region” said Dewar. “And the budget squeezes the Public Service”.

The government also failed to address other priorities in our community such as climate change, affordable housing, homeless and childcare.
